Which Island Is Easier to Reach?
Koh Phi Phi is considerably easier to include in most Southern Thailand itineraries.
Regular boats connect Koh Phi Phi with major travel hubs including Phuket and Krabi.
It also fits naturally between destinations such as Railay, Ao Nang and Koh Lanta, which makes it practical you have limited time.
Koh Lipe sits much farther south. Depending on your route and the season, reaching it may involve travelling through Pak Bara, Hat Yai, Trang, Koh Lanta or Langkawi.
Some direct island connections are seasonal, so the journey can require more planning outside the main travel period.
The extra travel time can make a bigger difference than the islands themselves, particularly if you’re planning a shorter trip.
Is Koh Lipe Worth the Extra Journey?
Koh Lipe is worth the extra journey when beaches, clear-dealer water and shore snorkelling are among the main reasons for your trip.
To make the longer journey worthwhile, I’d recommend spending at least three or four nights on the island rather than trying to squeeze it into a fast-paced itinerary.
Your starting point also makes a big difference. If you’re travelling through Langkawi, Hat Yai or southern Thailand, visiting Koh Lipe is a natural choice.
It’s particularly easy to combine with Langkawi, as the ferry journey takes less than two hours during the high season.
Even a day trip is possible, but you’ll need to allow time for Thai immigration and plan carefully around the ferry schedule.
If you’re starting from Phuket or Krabi and only have a few days, the additional travel time may outweigh the benefits. In that case, I’d save Koh Lipe for a future trip rather than rushing it.
It’s one of the most beautiful islands I’ve visited in Thailand, with powder-soft white sand, crystal-clear water and a lively but relaxed atmosphere that truly earns its nickname as the “Maldives of Thailand.”
Given enough time, I think Koh Lipe is absolutely worth the journey.

Koh Phi Phi’s appeal comes from its variety. You can experience lively beaches near Tonsai or walk to quieter stretches such as Long Beach and Loh Moo Dee.
You can even hike to secluded east-coast bays or take a longtail boat to places that cannot be reached easily on foot.
The island’s limestone setting makes many beaches look more dramatic than those on Koh Lipe.
However, boat traffic, tides and crowds can affect the experience, particularly near the central village and the most famous attractions.

Koh Lipe is much smaller, so exploring feels less like an adventure and more like a relaxed part of everyday island life.

The main hike is on neighbouring Koh Adang, where a steep but relatively short trail leads to one of the best viewpoints in Southern Thailand.

The real difference is how easy it is to escape the crowds and how each island feels once you do.

What stands out on Phi Phi is that Tonsai Village and Loh Dalum Beach are extremely busy.

It’s convenient to have everything within walking distance, but the busiest parts of Koh Phi Phi can also feel quite commercial and overdeveloped.
Day-trippers add to the busy atmosphere during the day, while the nightlife around Loh Dalum continues well into the night.
However, this isn’t the whole story. Despite its reputation, Koh Phi Phi is far more than just a party island.
Long Beach, Loh Ba Kao and Laem Tong feel noticeably quieter, while the jungle trails and more remote bays can be surprisingly peaceful.
Hiking away from the main tourist areas completely changes the experience, and if you stay outside Tonsai, the island feels much more relaxed than many people expect.

Koh Phi Phi has one of the liveliest nightlife scenes in Southern Thailand.
Around Tonsai Village and Loh Dalum Beach you’ll find party hostels, beach bars, clubs, pool parties, live music, fire shows and plenty of places that stay open until late.
One of the island’s more unusual attractions is Reggae Bar, where visitors can watch Muay Thai demonstrations and tourist boxing matches. It’s undeniably touristy, but it’s something a little different from the usual beach bars.
The biggest downside is that the nightlife on Koh Phi Phivcan be difficult to avoid.
If you stay close to Loh Dalum or the busiest streets, you’ll probably hear the music late into the night.
Choosing accommodation in quieter areas such as Long Beach, Loh Ba Kao or Laem Tong makes a huge difference.
Nightlife on Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe also has a surprisingly good nightlife scene.
Walking Street, Pattaya Beach and parts of Sunrise Beach are lined with bars, restaurants, party hostels, live music and regular fire shows, so it’s easy to spend the evening eating, having a few drinks or partying if that’s what you’re looking for.
The difference is that nightlife doesn’t dominate the island in the same way it does on Koh Phi Phi.
Walking Street stays lively well into the evening, but the atmosphere generally feels more relaxed, and it’s much easier to enjoy the bars before returning to a quieter hotel just a few minutes away.
I stayed close to the centre and never found the nightlife disruptive.

You can join in for as long as you like, then head back to your accommodation without feeling like the whole island revolves around the party scene.

Both Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe are islands where you can comfortably get around without renting a car or scooter.
The difference is that Koh Lipe feels almost effortless, while Koh Phi Phi rewards travellers who enjoy walking and exploring.
Getting Around Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phi Phi Don is very walkable. There are no cars in the main tourist area around Tonsai Village, Loh Dalum and the pier, and the island is very much designed for walking.
In fact, it’s common to see local workers pulling carts by hand rather than using scooters.
During my stay, I never needed transport either, but I also enjoy longer walks and jungle hikes.
If you’re staying around Tonsai, you’ll be able to reach most restaurants, viewpoints and several beaches on foot.
The only time transport becomes useful is if you want to stay in one of the more remote parts of Phi Phi Don, such as Laem Tong, or visit beaches that are more easily reached by longtail boat.
For most tourists, though, everything they need is within walking distance of the island’s centre.
Getting Around Koh Lipe
I also never felt the need for any form of transport on Koh Lipe.
The island is so compact that you can easily walk between Pattaya Beach, Sunrise Beach, Sunset Beach and Walking Street.
Everything feels close together, making it easy to head back to your hotel, stop for food or change beaches without really thinking about how you’re getting there.
Apart from the occasional local tuk-tuk for luggage or convenience, most people spend their entire stay on foot.

Koh Lipe is the easier island to explore on foot. Everything is close together, getting around feels effortless, and you’ll rarely even think about transport.
Koh Phi Phi is also an excellent walking island, but it’s larger, hillier and you might need to venture for an occasional jungle trail.
That being said, if you are staying near Tonsai village, you can comfortably spend your entire trip without using anything other than your own feet.

Both islands have accommodation for every budget, from backpacker hostels to beachfront resorts, but the experience of choosing where to stay is quite different.
Accommodation on Koh Phi Phi
Koh Phi Phi has a much wider range of accommodation.
As one of Thailand’s most popular islands, it simply has more hotels, hostels, guesthouses and resorts to choose from than Koh Lipe.
Where you stay, however, makes a big difference. Accommodation around Tonsai Village puts you within walking distance of restaurants, tours and the pier, but it can also be noisier, especially at night.
Areas such as Long Beach offer a quieter balance, while Loh Ba Kao and Laem Tong feel more secluded but are less convenient if you want to spend most of your time in the centre.
I usually book accommodation only a day or two in advance because I like staying flexible and deciding how long to spend on each island once I arrive.
That often means choosing fairly basic rooms, but I was pleasantly surprised by the value for money on Koh Phi Phi and never felt disappointed with my stays.
Accommodation on Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe has a good range of accommodation too, but the choice is naturally smaller because the island itself is much smaller.

There’s still plenty of choice, with everything from Thai restaurants to international cafés and beachfront seafood, but the range is naturally smaller than on Koh Phi Phi and prices can be slightly higher.

However, if variety and value for money are important to you, Koh Phi Phi has the advantage thanks to its much larger restaurant scene.

It’s easier and often cheaper to reach from Phuket or Krabi, and because the island is more developed, you’ll find a much wider range of hostels, guesthouses, restaurants and tour operators competing for your business.
That makes it easier to find accommodation and meals to suit almost any budget.
Koh Lipe is usually more expensive, partly because it’s more remote and transport costs are higher.
However, once you arrive, its compact size and excellent shore snorkelling mean you can spend an entire day enjoying the island without paying for taxis or expensive boat trips.

If keeping your overall travel costs as low as possible is the priority, Koh Phi Phi is the better choice.
That said, I wouldn’t rule out Koh Lipe just because it’s more expensive. If you’re travelling there for its beaches, clear water and relaxed atmosphere, I think the extra cost is well worth it.
How Long Should You Stay on Koh Phi Phi vs Koh Lipe?
Although both islands can be visited in just a few days, they suit different travel styles and deserve different amounts of time.
Koh Phi Phi is easier to fit into a shorter itinerary, but it also rewards travellers who stay longer.
Koh Lipe usually requires a longer stay simply because reaching it takes considerably more time.
How Long Should You Stay on Koh Phi Phi?
If you’re short on time, three nights is the minimum I’d recommend.
That gives you enough time to take a full-day boat trip to Maya Bay and still spend two days exploring Koh Phi Phi Don.
However, I actually think four or five nights is a much better experience.
One mistake many travellers make is treating Koh Phi Phi as a destination that can be “done” in a couple of days.
In reality, Koh Phi Phi is an archipelago rather than a single island. Tourists stay on Koh Phi Phi Don, while Maya Bay is located on the uninhabited Koh Phi Phi Leh, both of which form part of the wider Phi Phi Islands archipelago.
Visiting Maya Bay takes at least half day. That leaves surprisingly little time to discover what makes the main island special.
For me personally, the longer I stayed, the more I appreciated Koh Phi Phi.
Beyond Tonsai Village you’ll find jungle hikes, secluded beaches, panoramic viewpoints and quieter corners of the island that most visitors never reach.
There are also plenty of boat trips if you want to keep exploring the surrounding islands.
If you’re the kind of traveller who enjoys hiking, finding hidden beaches and avoiding the busiest tourist areas, I wouldn’t rush your visit.
How Long Should You Stay on Koh Lipe?
I recommend at least three or four nights on Koh Lipe, and even longer if your itinerary allows.
Unlike Koh Phi Phi, the main reason for staying longer isn’t the number of attractions, but the island itself. Koh Lipe is the kind of place where you naturally slow down.
Rather than rushing between sights, most days revolve around swimming, snorkelling, kayaking and enjoying the beaches at your own pace.
The journey is also much longer than travelling to Koh Phi Phi, so staying only one or two nights rarely feels worthwhile.

My Recommendation
If you only have a few days in Southern Thailand, Koh Phi Phi is still the better choice because it’s much easier to reach and offers plenty to see in a relatively short time.
But if you’re trying to decide how much time each island deserves, I’d actually give more days to Koh Phi Phi than most guides recommend.
The real character of Koh Phi Phi Don only starts to reveal itself once you venture beyond the main tourist areas.
Koh Lipe also deserves several days, but for a different reason. It’s a destination best enjoyed at a slower pace rather than one packed with sightseeing.

Should You Visit Both Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe?
Visiting both is worthwhile during a longer Andaman Coast trip, but I would not combine them in a one-week itinerary unless the transport connections are particularly convenient.
The journey between the islands can consume much of a day, and Koh Lipe deserves at least three or four nights to justify travelling so far south.
Koh Phi Phi normally needs at least two or three nights if you want to experience more than a rushed boat tour.
The combination works especially well when travelling south from Phuket or Krabi through Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lanta before continuing to Koh Lipe.
From Koh Lipe, you may also be able to continue to Langkawi when the relevant seasonal routes are operating.
Visit both if you have enough time for a varied trip combining adventure with slower beach days.
With limited time, choose the island that fits your existing route rather than spending a large part of the holiday transferring.

The journey between Koh Phi Phi and Koh Lipe changes depending on the season, and direct ferries don’t operate year-round. I always check the latest schedules before planning my route.
My Experience After Visiting Both Islands
Koh Lipe was the first Thai island I visited, and it made an immediate impression on me.
Even after travelling through Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and India, I still consider it one of the best places I have experienced for soft white sand and clear turquoise water.
I loved how easy the island was to navigate. I could walk everywhere, move between beaches without planning transport and combine snorkelling, kayaking and restaurants in one relaxed day.
On the other hand, my first reaction to Koh Phi Phi was very different. I initially noticed the crowds, tour boats and dense development around the pier.
My opinion changed once I began hiking beyond the main village. The viewpoints, jungle trails and quieter beaches revealed a side of Koh Phi Phi that many short-term visitors never experience.
It is far more rewarding when you explore beyond the pier and party streets.
To me Koh Lipe made the stronger first impression, but Koh Phi Phi offered more variety the longer I stayed.
when visiting again, for a short trip from Phuket or Krabi, I would choose Koh Phi Phi because it is easier to reach and offers more ways to fill several active days.
For a longer beach-focused stay, I would return to Koh Lipe for its clear water, swimming beaches and accessible snorkelling.
Neither island is universally better. The right choice depends mainly on your route, available time and whether you value active exploration or an easy beach experience more.
