Koh Lipe Weather & Climate Overview
Koh Lipe is a small tropical island in southern Thailand, close to the Malaysian border, and lies within the Tarutao National Marine Park in the Andaman Sea.
Thanks to its location near the equator, the island enjoys warm temperatures year-round, high humidity, and little variation in temperature between seasons.
| Travel Priority | Best Time |
|---|---|
| 🌴 Best overall | November–April |
| 🤿 Best snorkeling | December–April |
| 💰 Lowest prices | June–September |
| 🌤️ Fewer crowds | November & March |
| ☀️ Best weather | December–February |
| ⚠️ Months to avoid (monsoon season) | June–September |
Koh Lipe Seasons
Rather than experiencing four distinct seasons, Koh Lipe has two main seasons and two short transition months.
- Dry season (November to April): Expect mostly sunny days, calm seas, and the best conditions for snorkeling, island hopping, and beach holidays.
- Monsoon season (June to September): Rainfall becomes more frequent, seas are rougher, and weather is less predictable, although accommodation prices are generally lower.
- Transition months (May and October): These months sit between the two seasons, bringing a mix of sunshine and tropical showers with changing sea conditions.
Average Temperatures on Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe has a tropical climate, meaning it’s warm throughout the year with average daytime temperatures ranging from 29°C to 33°C (84°F to 91°F).

Although temperatures remain fairly consistent throughout the year, humidity is high year-round (typically between 75–90%), making it feel hotter than the thermometer suggests.
For most travellers, rainfall and sea conditions have a much bigger impact on the overall travel experience than temperature alone.
Weather patterns can vary slightly from year to year, so it’s worth checking the latest forecast before your trip.
Best Time to Visit Koh Lipe Overall
The best time to visit Koh Lipe is during the dry season from November to April, when you’ll enjoy sunny weather, calm seas, and excellent conditions for snorkeling, island hopping, and relaxing on the beach.
During these months, you can expect:
December to February is the busiest time of year, particularly around Christmas and New Year, when accommodation prices are highest and the island is at its liveliest.
From my own experience, late January is a fantastic time to visit. Even during Chinese New Year, the crowds felt manageable outside of Pattaya Beach, and I enjoyed sunny weather without a single day of rain.
For the best balance of great weather, good snorkeling, and fewer crowds, I recommend visiting in November, March, or early April. You’ll usually enjoy the same excellent conditions as peak season while avoiding the busiest holiday crowds.
Should You Visit During the Shoulder Season? (May & October)
The shoulder season is the period between the busy dry season and the quieter monsoon season.
On Koh Lipe, this typically falls in May and October, when the weather becomes more unpredictable but the island is less crowded than during peak season.
During these months, you can still enjoy plenty of sunshine, but rain showers become more frequent and sea conditions can change from day to day.
While many ferries, hotels, and tours continue to operate, rougher seas may occasionally affect snorkeling trips and boat schedules.
During the shoulder season, you can generally expect:
If you’re flexible with your travel plans and don’t mind the possibility of occasional rain, May and October can be rewarding times to visit.
However, if your main priorities are snorkeling, island hopping, and consistently calm seas, you’ll have a better experience visiting between November and April.
If you’re looking for a balance between good weather and fewer crowds, November and March remain my top recommendations.

Low Season on Koh Lipe (June to September)
The low season on Koh Lipe coincides with the southwest monsoon, which typically lasts from June to September.
During this time, the island experiences more frequent rainfall, rougher seas, and less predictable weather, making it the least popular time of year to visit.
Travel Insurance for Thailand
Travelling during the monsoon season? Protect your trip against unexpected delays, cancellations, and medical emergencies.
During the low season, you can generally expect:
Although Koh Lipe is far less crowded during these months, the weather can significantly impact your trip.
If you’re hoping to go snorkeling, join island-hopping tours, or enjoy lively atmosphere, the low season is unlikely to offer the experience you’re looking for.
However, if you’re travelling on a budget, don’t mind occasional rain, and are happy to adapt your plans to the weather, you may enjoy experiencing a quieter side of the island.
For most first-time visitors, though, I recommend planning your trip between November and April, when weather conditions are much more reliable and you’ll be able to make the most of everything Koh Lipe has to offer.
Koh Lipe Weather by Month
Dry Season
November
November marks the start of the dry season in Koh Lipe. The sea becomes calmer, snorkeling visibility improves, and ferry services return to their regular schedules.
It’s one of my favourite months to visit if you want great weather without the peak-season crowds and prices of December.
December
December brings some of the best weather of the year, with sunny days, calm seas, and excellent conditions for snorkeling and island hopping.
The second half of the month, especially around Christmas and New Year, is one of the busiest times to visit, so it’s worth booking accommodation and ferries well in advance.
January
January is one of the most popular months to visit Koh Lipe thanks to its warm temperatures, low rainfall, and crystal-clear water.
Beaches are lively, tours operate daily, and snorkeling conditions are usually excellent, although you’ll also encounter peak-season prices.
February
February continues the excellent weather, making it another fantastic month for beach days and exploring nearby islands.
Calm seas provide some of the clearest underwater visibility of the year, making it a favourite month for snorkelers and divers.
March
March offers many of the same advantages as peak season but with slightly fewer visitors after the busiest holiday period.
The weather remains dry, the sea is calm, and snorkeling conditions are still excellent, although temperatures start to climb.
April
April is one of the hottest months in Koh Lipe, but it’s also a great time for snorkeling thanks to calm seas and excellent visibility.
Visitor numbers often decrease after Easter, making it a good option if you want fantastic conditions with a little more space on the beaches.

Shoulder Season
May
May is a transition month as the southwest monsoon begins to arrive. You can still enjoy sunny days, but rainfall becomes more frequent and sea conditions are less predictable, which may affect snorkeling trips and ferry schedules.
October
October is another transition month as weather gradually begins improving before the dry season.
Some days are sunny while others can still be wet and windy, so it’s a reasonable option if you’re flexible but not the best choice if you’re planning your trip around snorkeling.
Low Season
June
June marks the beginning of the low season. Rain showers become more common, the sea is often rougher, and some hotels, restaurants, and tour operators start closing until the dry season returns.
July
July is firmly within the monsoon season, with frequent rain and rough seas. If you’re hoping to snorkel or join island-hopping tours, conditions can be hit or miss, although you’ll benefit from lower accommodation prices and a much quieter atmosphere.
August
August usually sees similar conditions to July, with regular rainfall and fewer visitors. While the island has a peaceful feel, ferry schedules and tours may be limited depending on the weather.
September
September is often one of the wettest months of the year. Heavy rain, rough seas, and reduced transport make it one of the least reliable months to visit if you want to explore the surrounding islands.

Best Time for Snorkeling in Koh Lipe
The best time for snorkeling in Koh Lipe is between December and April, when the sea is at its calmest and underwater visibility is often excellent.
During the dry season, lighter winds create calmer conditions, allowing sand and sediment to settle.
This means clearer water, better visibility, and a much greater chance of spotting colourful coral, tropical fish, and even sea turtles around Koh Lipe’s reefs.
For the calmest water, head out in the early morning, particularly around Sunrise Beach or on snorkeling tours to nearby islands before afternoon winds begin to pick up.
Snorkeling Conditions on Koh Lipe by Month
| Month | What to Expect |
|---|---|
| November | Excellent – Best balance of weather and crowds |
| December | Excellent – Book accommodation early |
| January | Excellent – Peak season with ideal conditions |
| February | Excellent – Ideal for snorkeling and island hopping |
| March | Excellent – Great weather with fewer crowds |
| April | Very good – Hot but excellent beach conditions |
| May | Good – Worth visiting if you’re flexible |
| June | Fair – Best for budget travellers |
| July | Poor – Wet season with limited activities |
| August | Poor – Rainy weather and rough seas |
| September | Avoid if possible – Peak monsoon season |
| October | Fair – Improving, but still unpredictable |

Cheapest Time to Visit Koh Lipe
The cheapest time to visit Koh Lipe is during the low season from June to September, when accommodation prices drop significantly due to lower visitor numbers.
If you’re travelling on a budget, this can be a great opportunity to stay in hotels or beachfront bungalows that are often much more expensive during the dry season.
Depending on the property, you may find rates that are 30–50% lower than in peak season.
During the low season, you can usually expect:
- Lower hotel prices and better availability
- Quieter beaches and fewer tourists
- Better value for longer stays
However, the lower prices come with some compromises. Weather conditions are less predictable, ferry schedules may be reduced, and rougher seas can affect snorkeling and island-hopping trips.
If saving money is your main priority and you’re happy to be flexible, the low season can still be worthwhile.
If you’re looking for a better balance between price and weather, consider visiting in May or October, when you may still find good deals with more reliable conditions.
