Choosing where to stay in Krabi matters more than many first-time visitors expect.
Krabi is a province, not one compact beach resort, and its main accommodation areas offer very different experiences.
Your base affects whether you can walk to the beach and restaurants, how easily you can join tours, and how much time and money you spend on taxis or boats.
Even a good hotel can feel like the wrong choice if its location does not suit your plans.
For most first-time visitors, Ao Nang is the easiest base. However, it is not the right choice for everyone.
I spent a week in Krabi Town and enjoyed its riverfront, markets, lower prices and local atmosphere. It suited my independent travel style, although I needed transport whenever I wanted to reach the coast.

If you are unsure where to stay, Ao Nang is the easiest choice for most first-time visitors.
However, another area may be better if you want quieter beaches, lower prices, local town life or a secluded resort.

Ao Nang: Best Overall for First-Time Visitors
For most first-time visitors, Ao Nang is the easiest place to stay in mainland Krabi.
It has a wide choice of hotels, restaurants and shops. Boats to Railay and island tours are also easy to arrange.
Ao Nang works really well if you are travelling without a scooter or car. Stay near the centre and you can walk to the beach, restaurants and tour offices.
Grab app, taxis and tours with hotel pickup are easily available and will take you farther.
Ao Nang Beach is convenient, but it is not particularly quiet. The area is busy with hotels, restaurants, tour operators and nightlife.
It is also a useful departure point for long-tail boats and a good spot to watch the sunset.
You can then visit Railay and Krabi’s islands when you want a more scenic beach day.
The main drawback for me was the busy, commercial atmosphere. The central road has plenty of traffic, shops and tourist-focused restaurants.
Ao Nang also covers a larger area than you might expect. Some cheaper and quieter hotels are uphill or too far from the beach to walk comfortably.
Ao Nang is a good choice if you want:
It is not the best choice if you want quiet mornings, a slower local feel, or somewhere that feels genuinely different from a beach town.
If that matters to you, Krabi Town or Railay may be better.
Noppharat Thara: A Quieter Part of Ao Nang
Noppharat Thara is part of a protected marine and coastal area next to central Ao Nang, but it generally feels less crowded.
It is good if you want a quieter beachfront while remaining close to restaurants, tours and Ao Nang’s facilities.
The area becomes more spread out as you move away from central Ao Nang. Check the hotel’s exact location because some properties are too far from the centre to walk comfortably.
The sea also retreats a long way at low tide, so the beach is not always ideal for swimming.

Budget and central: Wake Up Aonang Hotel
This simple hotel is a short walk from Ao Nang Beach, restaurants and long-tail boat departures. It is a practical choice if location matters more than resort facilities.
Central with resort facilities: BlueSotel Krabi AoNang Beach
This modern resort is about five minutes’ walk from Ao Nang Beach, with restaurants and shops nearby. Choose it if you want a central location without giving up a pool and resort facilities.
Tropical cliffside setting: Phu Pha Aonang Resort & Spa
This traditional Thai-style resort has a tropical setting beneath Ao Nang’s limestone cliffs. It is farther from the beach, but a scheduled shuttle makes getting there easier.
Quieter location: Mild Garden View Resort
This small resort has a pool and a garden setting close to Noppharat Thara Beach. It keeps you near Ao Nang while avoiding the busiest part of the centre.

Krabi Town: Best for Value and Local Life
Krabi Town is a good choice if you want lower prices, local food and a working town rather than a beach resort.
I spent a week here and would happily stay again. After several weeks of island hopping, I didn’t need a beach right outside my hotel.
Instead I settled for a quieter base near the river and Thara Park, with easy access to the rest of the Krabi’s mainland.
The most interesting areas are around the riverfront and town centre. You can easily walk to markets, local restaurants, Wat Kaew Korawaram temple and the riverside.

Krabi Town can also be convenient for reaching Krabi Airport and Klong Jilad Pier.
Grab app and taxis work well for nearby journeys, while organised tours can help you reach attractions farther away.
Check whether hotel pickup from Krabi Town is included before booking, as some tours start closer to Ao Nang.
The main drawback is the lack of a sandy beach. Ao Nang is around 20–30 minutes away by road, so regular beach trips add extra time and transport costs. Railay requires another boat journey.
Krabi Town is a good choice if you want:

I stayed here and would happily choose it again. It is a simple, affordable hotel in a quiet area near Thara Park and the river, although the main markets are farther away.
Central location: Into the Town Krabi
Small modern hotel in central Krabi Town, close to the markets, cafés and riverfront. A good choice if you want to explore the town on foot.

This modern hotel has an outdoor pool and a restaurant. It suits travellers who want more facilities while keeping Krabi Town’s generally affordable prices.

Railay: Best for Scenery, Beaches and Rock Climbing
Railay is different again. It is not really a town in the usual sense. It is a peninsula with dramatic limestone cliffs, a small settlement and very limited road access.
It is part of the mainland, but limestone cliffs separate it from the surrounding towns.
The area is reached by boat, which immediately makes it feel more removed from the rest of Krabi.
There is no road connecting it to Ao Nang or Krabi Town, so most visitors arrive by long-tail boat.
Once you arrive, Railay is compact and easy to explore on foot. You can walk between Railay West, Railay East and Phra Nang Beach, with numerous climbing areas, viewpoints and kayaking nearby.

Railay is not secluded throughout the day. Tour boats bring plenty of visitors, particularly around Railay West and Phra Nang Beach.
Staying overnight lets you enjoy quieter mornings and evenings after many day-trippers leave.
The main drawback is the boat access. Reaching the airport or exploring mainland Krabi requires both a boat and a road transfer.
There are restaurants, bars and small shops, but the choice is more limited than in Ao Nang. Prices can also be higher because everything must be brought in by boat.
Railay is a good choice if you want:
Railay is not the best choice if you want flexibility, budget value or quick access to the wider region. For that kind of trip, Krabi Town or Ao Nang will feel easier.
Railay West, Railay East or Tonsai?
Railay West has the best beach access and sunset views. It is also generally more expensive and becomes busy with day visitors.
Railay East is close to restaurants, the walking street and the floating pier. Its mangrove shoreline is not suitable for swimming, but Railay West and Phra Nang Beach are a short walk away.
Tonsai is quieter and popular with climbers and budget travellers. Access is more limited, so do not book it assuming you can walk easily to Railay at any time.

Tonsai option: Tonsai Bay Resort
This resort is close to Tonsai Beach, climbing areas and a beachfront restaurant. It suits travellers who prefer a quieter setting and understand the additional access limitations.

Klong Muang: Best for a Quieter Beach Stay
Klong Muang is a quieter coastal base north of Ao Nang. It works well for couples, families and if you want to stay near the beach without the traffic and busyness of central Ao Nang.
The area has a selection of local restaurants, beach bars and small shops, although the choice is still limited compared with Ao Nang.
Hotels are spread along the coast and around the village, so check the map carefully before booking.
Some hotels are right beside the beach, while others require a walk or short drive.
Klong Muang is connected to the rest of Krabi by road. You can manage without a scooter if you are happy to use taxis, hotel transfers and organised tours.
Klong Muang is a good choice if you want:
The drawback is that it is not as convenient for short stays or if you want easy access to lots of restaurants and nightlife on foot. It feels more like resort areas than practical travel bases.

Modern option: Loy Chalet
Loy Chalet offers spacious rooms, a pool and a quiet garden setting. It is around a ten-minute walk from the beach, so it suits travellers who do not need to stay directly on the sand.

Tubkaek: Best for a Quiet Resort Stay
Tubkaek is farther along the coast from Klong Muang. It is known for its quiet beachfront, island views and easy access to the Dragon Crest Mountain trail.
This area works best if you plan to spend plenty of time at your hotel.
Most of the coastline is occupied by resorts, with relatively few independent restaurants, shops or evening activities nearby.
You can stay in Tubkaek without renting a moped or car, but you will rely on hotel transfers and taxis whenever you want to explore.
Check whether your hotel provides airport transfers and whether tours include pickup from Tubkaek.
The area is known for expensive resorts, but you can still find a few cheaper places to stay. Just keep in mind that they may be farther from the beach or have fewer facilities.

Ao Nam Mao: A Quiet Alternative Near Railay
Ao Nam Mao is a quiet, spread-out area between Ao Nang and Krabi Town.
Its main advantages are road access and the boat connection from Ao Nam Mao Pier to Railay.
The coastline is not as nice for swimming as Railay, Klong Muang or Tubkaek. Parts become shallow, rocky or muddy at low tide, so do not assume that a beachfront hotel will have a good swimming beach.
Restaurants and shops are limited, and hotels can be far apart. Check the exact location, nearby dining options and transport before booking.
Ao Nam Mao is a good choice if easy access to Railay is important to you, but you do not want to stay in busy Ao Nang.
The area is quieter, although you may need taxis or hotel transport to get around.

Staying in one area is the simplest option for most trips. You avoid moving your luggage, checking in twice and arranging another transfer.
One base makes sense if you have a short stay or plan to spend most days on organised tours.
Ao Nang is usually the easiest choice, but you can use any of the six areas if it matches your main priorities.
A split stay will be worthwhile when the second area gives you a genuinely different experience.
The most useful combinations are:
- Ao Nang and Railay: Start with restaurants, tours and easy transport in Ao Nang. Finish with a few nights surrounded by Railay’s beaches and cliffs.
- Krabi Town and Railay: Combine markets, riverfront walks and local food with a car-free beach stay.
- Ao Nang and Tubkaek: Use Ao Nang for activities before moving to a quieter resort for the end of your trip.
- Ao Nang and Klong Muang: Combine convenience with a calmer beach, without adding a boat transfer.
It is usually not worth moving between Klong Muang, Tubkaek and Ao Nam Mao unless you want to stay at a particular hotel. Changing hotels will likely add more hassle than variety.

Your hotel location affects more than your daily sightseeing. It can also change how easily you reach the airport, tour departure points and onward ferries.

Ferry departure points depend on the destination, operator and season. Do not assume that every Krabi ferry leaves from the same pier.

How the Season Affects Where You Stay in Krabi
November to March is usually the best time to visit Krabi for beaches, hiking and boat trips. The weather is generally drier, and sea conditions are often calmer.
However, this is also the busiest period, so hotels in Railay, Klong Muang and Tubkaek can be more expensive or sell out earlier.
March and April are usually hotter but can still work well for a beach holiday.
If you plan to hike Dragon Crest Mountain or climb the steps at Tiger Cave Temple, start early to avoid the strongest heat.
May to October is the monsoon and Krabi’s wetter season. You can still have sunny days, but heavy rain and rough seas may occasionally delay boats and island tours.
Always check the Krabi weather forecast before planning boat trips or exposed hikes.
Ao Nang is often the easiest base during this period because you have plenty of restaurants and services nearby.
Railay and the quieter beach areas can still be enjoyable in the wet season, but they may feel limiting during prolonged rain.
Check your hotel’s cancellation policy and transfer arrangements before booking, particularly in September and October, which are generally the wettest months.

Hotel names do not always give an accurate idea of their location. Before booking, check:

Should I split my stay between Ao Nang and Railay?
A split stay can work well if you have at least five nights and want both Ao Nang’s convenience and Railay’s atmosphere.
For a two- or three-night visit, staying in Ao Nang and visiting Railay for the day is usually easier. Moving luggage by boat is rarely worth the effort for only one night.
