Sunrise Beach (Best Overall Area to Stay in Koh Lipe)

Sunrise Beach is widely considered the best area to stay in Koh Lipe — especially if you want clear water, easy swimming and some of the best snorkeling straight from the shore.

Soft, white sand and clear water perfect for snorkelling on the Sunrise Beach, Koh Lipe.

Stretching along the east coast of the island, this beach has soft white sand, calm turquoise water and far fewer boats than Pattaya Beach, which makes it feel more relaxed and scenic.

It’s also one of the best places to watch the sunrise in Koh Lipe. Early mornings here are quiet and peaceful, with soft light and almost no crowds — a completely different vibe from the busier parts of the island.

You can see how Sunrise beach compares with other spots in this guide to the best beaches in Koh Lipe.

From a location point of view, Sunrise Beach hits the sweet spot. You’re close enough to Walking Street (around 5–10 minutes on foot), but far enough to avoid the noise.

If it’s your first time in Koh Lipe, this is the safest and most balanced area to stay.

Best Hotels on Sunrise Beach

Here are the best places to stay on Sunrise Beach, from unique high-end villas to budget beachfront bungalows.

Pattaya Beach (Most Convenient Area to Stay in Koh Lipe)

Pattaya Beach is the main arrival point in Koh Lipe — and the busiest area on the island. This is where all ferries and speedboats dock, and where you’ll find the highest concentration of restaurants, bars and hotels.

The beach itself has soft white sand and clear water, especially in the morning before boat traffic picks up.

But unlike Sunrise Beach, this area is much more active, with longtail boats and day tours running throughout the day.

That said, Pattaya Beach is the most convenient place to stay. You’re right next to Walking Street, which makes it easy to access everything — from food and cafés to tours and transport.

If you prefer everything within walking distance and don’t mind a busier atmosphere, this is the easiest place to stay in Koh Lipe.

What it’s like to stay here

  • Central hub of the island — everything is close
  • Direct access to Walking Street
  • Lots of restaurants, bars and nightlife
  • Easy for arrivals and short stays

What to consider

  • Boat traffic throughout the day
  • Can feel crowded, especially in high season
  • Not the best beach for swimming compared to Sunrise Beach

This is the most in-demand area for convenience — hotels here tend to book out quickly, especially for short stays.

Sunset Beach (Quietest Area to Stay in Koh Lipe)

Sunset Beach is the quietest of the three main beaches in Koh Lipe, located on the northwest side of the island. It’s smaller, less developed and feels noticeably more relaxed compared to both Sunrise and Pattaya Beach.

As the name suggests, this is the best place on the island to watch the sunset.

In the evenings, the light turns warm and golden, reflecting over the calm water — easily one of the most beautiful moments of the day in Koh Lipe.

The beach itself is a mix of soft sand and some rocky areas, depending on where you are.

The water is usually calm and swimmable, although it’s not as clear or as well-known for snorkeling as Sunrise Beach.

This area feels more remote, even though it’s only about a 10–15 minute walk from Walking Street.

For a similar quiet island vibe, you might also like Koh Mook, which is one of the least touristy islands in Thailand.

If you want a quieter stay and don’t mind being slightly removed from the center, Sunset Beach is the best choice.

What it’s like to stay here

  • Quiet, laid-back atmosphere with fewer people
  • Beautiful sunset views every evening
  • Slower pace — ideal for relaxing
  • A few beachfront bars and restaurants

If you’re deciding between islands, this Koh Lipe vs Koh Mook comparison breaks it down clearly.

What to consider

  • Fewer hotel options
  • Limited nightlife and dining compared to Pattaya Beach
  • Some rocky areas in the water

Staying Near Walking Street (Best for Budget & Convenience)

If you’re traveling on a budget or only staying in Koh Lipe for a short time, staying near Walking Street is one of the most practical options.

Walking Street runs through the center of the island, connecting Pattaya Beach and Sunrise Beach.

It’s where you’ll find most restaurants, cafés, shops and tour agencies — so everything is within a few minutes’ walk.

Unlike beachfront stays, accommodation here is usually cheaper and more varied, ranging from simple guesthouses to small hotels and hostels.

And if you’re planning a longer trip, this 3 week Southern Thailand itinerary shows how to include Koh Lipe efficiently.

If your priority is saving money or being close to everything, this is the easiest place to stay in Koh Lipe.

What it’s like to stay here

  • Central location between all main beaches
  • Cheapest accommodation options on the island
  • Easy access to restaurants, shops and tours
  • Good for short stays or last-minute bookings

What to consider

  • No direct beach access
  • Can be noisy, especially in the evening
  • Less scenic compared to beachfront areas

Common Mistakes When Booking Accommodation in Koh Lipe

  • Staying in the wrong area: Booking on Pattaya Beach when you want quiet (or choosing a secluded spot when you want nightlife) can completely change your experience.
  • Assuming “beachfront” means your room is on the beach: Many resorts are beachfront, but some rooms are set back in gardens or uphill — always check the exact room type.
  • Booking bamboo bungalows without expecting mosquitoes: Rustic stays often have gaps, open-air bathrooms and more insects. Mosquito nets help, but aren’t always perfect.
  • Booking a room without air conditioning: Koh Lipe is hot and humid year-round — a fan is usually not enough for a comfortable stay.
  • Expecting large rooms on a lower budget: Most accommodation is compact, especially near the beach. More space usually means a higher price.
  • Booking all-inclusive instead of eating locally: Koh Lipe has plenty of affordable restaurants, and eating out is part of the experience — plus it supports local businesses.
  • Not checking if the hotel is family-friendly: Some resorts have busy pools and shared spaces, which may not suit you if you’re looking for a quiet stay.
  • Not booking early for peak season (but also overthinking it): Christmas and New Year are the busiest times, so booking in advance helps secure better options — but even last minute, you can still find affordable places (I did).

To avoid crowds and get the best experience on the island, it’s worth booking a few key things in advance:
